Over three months, participants will engage in a hybrid programme that blends live online lectures with immersive in-person workshops at our purpose built Kilkenny Studio, giving learners direct access to expert teaching, real fittings, and a professional darkroom environment. Meet Your Lecturer, Willie Duggan

Founded in 1935 by Willie Duggan Sr., our company has always believed lighting is more than utility; it’s a craft that shapes atmosphere and experience. From the early days of Kilkenny Design workshops to becoming Ireland’s largest designer lighting supplier, three generations of Duggans have carried this vision forward.
Today, Willie Duggan Lighting is known not only for exceptional design but also for its pioneering darkroom and experiential studio, where light can truly be felt and explored. Carrying forward this tradition with global expertise, Willie Duggan is a Chartered Engineer, keynote speaker, lighting designer, and educator with over two decades of experience. Holding both a BScEng in Building Services Engineering and an MSc in Light & Lighting from UCL, his career spans international projects including the Okhta Tower in St. Petersburg and King’s Cross WCC in London.

An introduction to the course, your project work, and how you’ll be evaluated. We look at the evolution of light and lighting past, present, and future and considering how light is foundational to life itself and underpins human evolution and culture.

Lighting By Design

Discover what lighting design is and how designers think. We break down the process step by step, with hands-on exercises and real-world project examples to make it practical and relatable.

Darkroom Discovery

Experience light first-hand in our Kilkenny Studio. Through testing, experimenting, and interactive sessions, you’ll understand intensity, colour and LED specifications.

Learn how to move from ideas to actionable designs. We cover essential tools, techniques, and the art of selecting the right fittings for different project environments.

From Concept to Plan

Review and refine your design concepts with feedback from the group. Begin the development phase by planning layouts, circuits, controls, and technical details for real-world application.

A second in-person darkroom day. You experiment with modelling, colour effects, and mock-ups, learning how to prototype ideas, test details, and refine designs through iteration.
