Description

The micro-credential is delivered over a 10 week period. The contact hours are 10 live classes of one hour duration and 10 self directed learning hours, again one hour per week.

This micro credential aims to support learners through the Recognition of Prior Learning application process. Having completed this micro credential, RPL applicants will gain an understanding of what is involved in RPL. They will begin to gather evidence of their prior learning and experience and identify how this can support their application. Participants will learn how different forms of prior learning are captured, this includes formal certified learning, informal learning and non-formal learning. Participants will develop an e portfolio as part of the micro-credential assessment. This e-portfolio may then be used by participants to submit an RPL application to SETU (and other third level providers) and/or to advise on the RPL application process.

Learning Outcomes:
After completion of this micro-credential participants will be able to:

1. Develop an e-portfolio that showcases prior learning and experience, to a standard suitable for prospective students using the RPL application process.

2. Show how to translate formal, informal and non-formal learning into knowledge, skills and competences within an RPL application form for third level study.

There are approximately 60 effort hours in this micro-credential. These effort hours are composed of:
• Interaction with the facilitator and peers via online activities and discussion forums over a 10 week period
• Participation at live synchronous tutorials and directed asynchronous peer groups.
• Self-directed learning including completion of set learning activities, completion of set readings and texts, viewing and interaction with course resources (podcasts, video and animations).
The learning process is informed by a constructivist approach which values previous learning and encourages reflection on the social and cultural contexts of their practice.

ECTS credit amount: 2.5 ECTS

Entry Requirements: Level 5 QQI or equivalent.

Participants will be required to evidence their achievement of the learning outcomes by contributing to discussion forums and developing a personal ePortfolio during the micro-credential.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that facilitates admission to South East Technological University (SETU), either to enter a programme or to receive credits from parts of that programme, based on previous education, work and voluntary experience. It is a means by which
prior learning is identified, assessed, and formally recognised. This makes it possible for an individual to build on learning previously acquired and to
be rewarded for it. SETU recognises that knowledge, skills and competencies can be acquired from a wide range of learning experiences and RPL forms part of the inclusive approach to learning at SETU.

RPL is an integral component of the University’s commitment to learning and makes higher education more accessible, inclusive and flexible, thereby widening participation. The University acknowledges the varied means by which learning happens and provides alternative routes to and through SETU programmes. RPL encompasses formal learning, non-formal learning, and informal learning.
